Alexander H. Alexandrov
Profile:
Elected an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences (IEAS) in 1996, Alexander H. Alexandrov is a Full Member (Academician) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and a leading authority in silviculture, forest genetics, and ecology in Bulgaria. Born in Stara Zagora on 24 September 1938, he graduated from the Higher Institute of Forestry in Sofia in 1961. Following early field appointments in Tsonevo and Velingrad, he joined the Forest Research Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1967, beginning a distinguished career dedicated to forest science and management. He received the degree of Doctor of Agricultural Sciences (D.Sc.) in 1984 and subsequently served as Deputy Director of the Institute from 1986 to 1988 and as Director from 1989 to 1993 and again from 2001 onward. Elected a Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1995 and an Academician in 2003, he has also served as Chairman of the Publishing Council of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and as a member of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Bulgaria.

His research centres on the genetics, ecology, and silviculture of South-East European forests, with particular emphasis on the development of high-productivity stands, the breeding and conservation of forest tree species, and the phytogeography of Balkan flora. His scientific record comprises more than 250 publications, including major monographs on coniferous forests and forest genetics, as well as authoritative taxonomic treatments of Aesculus hippocastanum, Pinus peuce, and Acer heldreichii in Enzyklopädie der Holzgewächse. With approximately 1,200 citations, his work has contributed to both scientific research and forest policy, including through his 2015 assessment of Bulgaria’s forest genetic resources. His expertise has also informed international work on the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources.   Beyond his academic career, he has contributed to public administration at the highest level, serving as Minister of Environment in 1990. His career reflects a sustained integration of scientific research, forest resource conservation, and public policy in support of the sustainable stewardship of natural resources.
