Professor Baklanov’s research centres on online coupled meteorology–chemistry modelling, with particular emphasis on boundary-layer meteorology, mesoscale numerical weather prediction, atmospheric aerosol dynamics, and the interactions between megacity air quality, local climate, and global climate change. As an initiator and European coordinator of seamless integrated modelling, he has advanced an approach that treats atmospheric physics and chemistry as an interconnected system, leading major international initiatives including FUMAPEX, MEGAPOLI, EnviroHIRLAM, and EuMetChem. His work has also contributed to the development of the WMO methodology for integrated urban hydrometeorological, climate, and environmental systems, strengthening the scientific basis for resilient and sustainable cities. Since its establishment, he has served as Editor-in-Chief of Urban Climate. With approximately 400 scientific publications, including 14 books and nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers, his work has received more than 8,400 citations and an h-index of 45. His representative publications in Urban Climate, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, Geoscientific Model Development, Atmospheric Environment, and Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics reflect a sustained contribution to integrated atmospheric modelling and to understanding the links between urbanisation, air quality, climate, and the wider Earth system.
