Markku Kivinen
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences on 8 May 2015, Professor Markku Jalmari Kivinen is a distinguished Finnish sociologist and an internationally recognised authority on Russian and East European studies. Born in Helsinki on 5 June 1951, he received his M.A. in sociology and philosophy from the University of Helsinki in 1977, followed by his Licentiate in 1986 and Ph.D. in 1989, with doctoral research on the new middle classes and the labour process. After holding research and teaching positions at the Academy of Finland and several Finnish universities, as well as a visiting professorship at the University of Michigan, he was appointed Director of the Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki in 1996. During his 22-year tenure, he developed the Institute from a small research unit into one of Western Europe’s largest centres for Russian studies. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus and Research Director of the Institute and previously led the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence “Choices of Russian Modernisation” (2012–2019). His contributions to scholarship and public intellectual life have been recognised through the Order of the White Rose of Finland, the City of Helsinki Research Prize, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Professor Kivinen’s research has centred on social theory, Russian modernisation, domestic and foreign policy, comparative transition, social inequality, power and democracy, and the cultural structures underlying macro-social change. Through multidisciplinary research and extensive international collaboration, he has made significant contributions to the analysis of class formation, welfare-state development, and the social foundations of energy policy in post-Soviet societies. He has authored more than 300 scholarly publications, including influential works on class analysis and Russian modernisation, and has served as series editor of Routledge’s Studies of Contemporary Russia. His scholarship has also extended into literary writing, including the novels Betonijumalia (2009) and Lähetin loppupeli (2016). His selected works on Russian modernisation, comparative welfare systems, regional inequality, and Russia’s energy relations with Europe and the Far East reflect a sustained effort to connect sociological theory with empirical analysis of political, economic, and cultural transformation across Russia and the wider Eurasian region.
