Professor Taalas’s research has encompassed satellite technology, atmospheric chemistry, global environmental change, and climate dynamics, with particular emphasis on stratospheric ozone, ultraviolet radiation, Arctic climate change, and the development of advanced satellite-based observation systems. Through leadership of research and development programmes supported by the European Union, the European Space Agency, EUMETSAT, and the Academy of Finland, he has contributed to the advancement of remote sensing for operational weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and air-quality services. His scientific work has been closely connected with the development of international observation and information systems, providing a foundation for the application of atmospheric science to environmental assessment and public decision-making. He has authored approximately 50 peer-reviewed publications, maintaining an active research profile alongside extensive responsibilities in scientific administration and international governance. Collectively, these contributions reflect a career connecting atmospheric and Earth-system science with international cooperation and the practical challenges of climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.
