Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2005, Professor Mingzhe Chen is a distinguished Chinese cardiologist and a pioneer in the development of laser medicine. Born in May 1935 in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, he received his M.D. from Beijing Medical College, now Peking University Health Science Center, in 1959 and began his clinical career at the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical College, progressing from resident physician to Chief Physician, Deputy Director of Internal Medicine, and subsequently Professor and Chief Physician in 1987. From 1989 to 1993, he served as Vice President of the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University and, from 1993 to 1996, as its President. In 1979, he undertook advanced training in the United States, serving as a Research Fellow and Visiting Professor at the Western Heart Institute and as Deputy Director of the Oakland Laser Institute, where he also obtained an American M.D. degree. In 2001, he was appointed Vice Dean of the School of Medicine at Tsinghua University and, in 2003, became President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University, a position he held until his retirement.

Professor Chen’s research has focused on the clinical application of laser technology in cardiovascular medicine, particularly laser angioplasty, laser myocardial revascularisation, and the integration of laser-based approaches with conventional interventional cardiology. Through sustained academic and clinical collaboration between Chinese and American medical institutions, he contributed to the introduction and development of advanced laser medical technologies in China and established one of the country’s early centres for laser cardiovascular intervention. His clinical and research activities contributed to the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease and to the training of successive generations of cardiologists and specialists in laser medicine. He authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and several monographs on laser cardiology and received multiple national and ministerial awards for scientific and technological progress. Alongside his clinical research, his leadership in hospital administration and medical education contributed to the development of cardiovascular medicine and the wider application of laser technologies in clinical practice. Collectively, his career reflects a sustained effort to connect advances in laser technology with cardiovascular medicine through clinical research, medical education, and international scientific cooperation.
