Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1998, Dr. Zitan Chen is a distinguished Chinese-American geospatial scientist with pioneering contributions to the development and international application of geographic information system (GIS) technology. Born in 1944, he received his B.S. in Physics from Peking University in 1968 and subsequently worked as an engineer at the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping from 1974 to 1980. He then pursued graduate studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), receiving his M.A. in 1982 and Ph.D. in Geography in 1987, while also serving as a teaching assistant and research assistant. In 1987, he joined the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) as a Senior Research Scientist and, from 1991, served as General Manager for Greater China, overseeing operations in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Mongolia. Since 2007, he has concurrently served as Senior Scientific Advisor at ESRI, contributing to the continued development of the ArcGIS software platform. His professional career has combined geospatial research and software development with international scientific cooperation and the advancement of GIS applications.

Dr. Chen’s research has focused on GIS architecture, computational cartography, remote sensing, and the development of specialised geospatial applications, with particular emphasis on integrating spatial analysis and mapping capabilities into operational software systems. His research and engineering contributions have been incorporated into the ArcGIS product suite, supporting the application of geospatial technologies across government, academia, and industry. He has authored 47 peer-reviewed publications and one monograph and has contributed to GIS education and research through appointments as Advisor to the GIS Laboratory at Tsinghua University, Visiting Professor at Nanjing Normal University, and Research Fellow at the Joint Laboratory for Geoinformation Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. As a founding council member of the International Association of Chinese Professionals in Geographic Information Sciences and a columnist for GIS Asia Pacific, he has also contributed to the development of professional networks and the dissemination of GIS knowledge in China and the Asia-Pacific region. Through software donations to universities and secondary schools, academic exchanges, and sustained engagement with research and professional communities, Dr. Chen has supported the development of GIS education and talent and its application to urban planning, environmental management, and sustainable development across the Eurasian region.
