Professor Fan’s research has focused on high-performance computing, cloud computing, and parallel and distributed computing, with particular emphasis on the development and application of large-scale computing systems. As an early contributor to the Dawning series of high-performance computers, he led software development for Dawning-1, China’s first symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) parallel computer, and subsequently directed work on the Dawning-1000 and Dawning scalable parallel computer systems. These developments contributed to the establishment of technical and engineering capabilities for the large-scale development and application of high-performance computing in China. He has completed more than ten projects under the National 863 Programme, authored three monographs, published more than 150 academic papers, and applied for more than 80 patents. His scientific and technological contributions have been recognised through one National Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize), two National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second Prize), two CAS Science and Technology Progress Awards (Special Prize), and one CAS Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize). Beyond high-performance computing, he introduced the “Low-Cost Health” concept in 2006 and led the development of more than ten medically certified diagnostic devices and systems for primary healthcare, which have been deployed across approximately 50,000 grassroots healthcare outlets and reached an estimated 50 million people nationwide. Through sustained leadership in national research programmes, technology development, and institutional innovation, Professor Fan has contributed to connecting advances in computer science and engineering with large-scale computing infrastructure, accessible healthcare technologies, and the development of interdisciplinary research and innovation capabilities in China.
