Professor Geng’s research has focused on loess geochemistry, Quaternary palaeoclimate change, the integrated genetic analysis of coal-derived gas, petroleum migration, and hydrocarbon generation from specialised forms of organic matter. Through extensive field investigations and laboratory studies across major sedimentary basins in China, he has contributed to the geochemical characterisation of loess deposits as archives of palaeoclimate change, the development of multi-criteria approaches for determining the origins of coal-derived gas, and the understanding of hydrocarbon generation from non-conventional organic matter. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored four monographs. His research has been recognised through eight national, CAS, and Guangdong Provincial Natural Science and Science and Technology Progress Awards, including the CAS Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize), the CAS Natural Science Award (First Prize), and the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Award (Second Prize). He currently serves as Executive Director of the Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry, Vice President of the Guangdong Provincial Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry, and Vice President of the Guangdong Petroleum Society. Through sustained research in organic geochemistry and leadership in national key laboratories and major research programmes, Professor Geng has contributed to the application of geochemical methods to petroleum exploration, palaeoclimate reconstruction, and the assessment of energy resources.
