Huili GONG
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2016, Professor Huili Gong is a distinguished Chinese geospatial scientist whose research has made significant contributions to geographic information systems, remote sensing, and water-resource management. Born in September 1956, he received his B.S. in 1986, M.S. in 1993, and Ph.D. in 1996 from Changchun College of Geology, now the College of Environment, Jilin University, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute of Remote Sensing, Peking University, from 1996 to 1998. He has been recognised as an Outstanding Core Teacher by the Ministry of Education and as a Beijing Top-Notch Innovative Talent. He currently serves as Director of the Key Laboratory of 3D Information Acquisition and Application of the Ministry of Education, Director of the Engineering Research Center of Spatial Information Technology of the Ministry of Education, and Director of the Environmental and Ecological Processes Division of the National Urban Environmental Pollution Control Engineering Technology Research Center. His academic and professional service has included membership of the Geography Discipline Review Group of the Sixth Session of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and the Teaching Guidance Committee for Geography Science Majors of Higher Education Institutions under the Ministry of Education. He has also served as Vice President of the Geographical Society of China and President of the Beijing Geographical Society.

Professor Gong’s research has focused on the teaching and application of geographic information systems and remote sensing, with particular emphasis on urban water-resource management, groundwater systems, and environmental disaster assessment. Through leadership of major national research projects, including projects under the National 863 Programme, National Key Projects, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as participation in China–France intergovernmental international cooperation projects, he has contributed to the development of decision-support systems for urban water-resource management and the application of remote sensing technologies to flood-disaster monitoring and assessment. He has authored more than 170 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Water Research, Journal of Systems Science and Information, and Science China, as well as more than ten monographs and atlases, including Urban Water Resource Management Decision Support System, 1998 China Catastrophic Flood Remote Sensing Atlas (Chinese–English bilingual edition), and Groundwater Geographic Information System. His contributions have been recognised through seven Provincial/Ministerial-level teaching and science and technology progress awards. Through sustained research, leadership of national research platforms, international scientific collaboration, and academic service, Professor Gong has contributed to connecting geospatial information technologies with practical challenges in urban water management, environmental protection, and disaster monitoring.
