Daming HE
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2020, Professor Daming He is a distinguished Chinese hydrogeographer and hydroecologist whose research has contributed to the study of international rivers, transboundary water resources, and ecological security in Asia. Born on 18 December 1958 in Nanchong, Sichuan Province, he received his B.S. in Terrestrial Hydrology from Chengdu University of Science and Technology in 1982, his M.S. in Physical Geography from Nanjing University in 1988, and his Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from Beijing Normal University in 2001. He began his professional career as an Assistant Engineer at the Kunming Hydropower Survey and Design Institute of the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power from 1982 to 1985. In 1988, he joined the Yunnan Institute of Geography, where he served as Deputy Director from 1996 and attained the rank of Research Professor in 1997. He joined Yunnan University in July 2000 as Professor and Doctoral Supervisor and, in October of the same year, founded the Asian International Rivers Center, serving as its Director. His subsequent institutional leadership included service as Vice Dean of the School of Life Sciences from 2003 to 2005, Director of the Institute of Natural Sciences from 2006 to 2012, and Director of the Institute of International Rivers and Ecological Security from 2012 to 2015. He currently serves as Distinguished Professor at Yunnan University, Director of the Asian International Rivers Center, and Director of the Yunnan Provincial Key Laboratory of International Rivers and Transboundary Ecological Security.

Professor He’s research has focused on international rivers, transboundary water resources, and ecological security in Asia, with particular emphasis on the hydrology, ecology, and human–environment interactions of the Mekong, Salween, Irrawaddy, and other transboundary river systems. Through extensive field investigations across the Tibetan Plateau and Southeast Asia, he has contributed to the understanding of hydrological regimes, sediment transport, and ecosystem dynamics in major Asian international rivers, as well as to the study of transboundary water cooperation and ecological risk assessment. His research has been supported by multiple major national research projects and international collaborative initiatives, integrating hydrogeographical analysis with questions of water-resource management and regional ecological security. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and monographs and has led research programmes addressing the environmental and socio-economic dimensions of international river systems. Through sustained research and institutional leadership at Yunnan University, Professor He has contributed to the development of interdisciplinary approaches to international river studies and to broader scientific discussions on transboundary water governance, ecological security, and sustainable development in Asia.
