Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1998, Professor Wei Huang is a distinguished Chinese geomatics scientist whose research and professional work have focused on geographic information systems, cartography, and the application of geospatial technologies to urban planning and management. Born in 1939, he has pursued his professional career at the Automation Center of the Guangzhou Municipal Urban Planning Bureau, where he serves as Professor. His research has centred on the development and application of GIS-based urban information systems, with particular emphasis on the use of geospatial technologies in urban planning and management. Through sustained engagement with the digital development of urban planning in China, Professor Huang has contributed to the automation of cartographic processes, the construction of municipal geospatial databases, and the integration of remote sensing technologies with urban management. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and technical reports addressing the application of geospatial science to urban planning and related practical challenges.

Collectively, Professor Huang’s work reflects a sustained research and professional programme connecting cartographic science and geographic information systems with the practical requirements of urban planning and management. His contributions have addressed the development of geospatial information infrastructure and the application of digital and remote sensing technologies to urban management, providing a link between advances in geomatics and the evolving information needs of rapidly developing cities in China.
