Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2004, Professor Zhenghua Jiang is a distinguished Chinese demographer and systems engineer whose academic and professional career has also included extensive public service. Born in Zhejiang Province, he graduated from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1959 and began his academic career as a teaching assistant in the university’s Automatic Control Teaching and Research Section in 1958. From 1978, he served as Lecturer at the Institute of Systems Engineering and Deputy Director of the Population Research Center at Xi’an Jiaotong University. From 1980 to 1982, he pursued graduate studies at the International Institute for Population Sciences in Mumbai, India, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 2004. From 1982, he served as Director of the Institute of Population and Economics at Xi’an Jiaotong University and was appointed Professor by special approval of the State Council in 1984, becoming a doctoral supervisor in 1985. Beginning in 1991, he served as Vice Minister of the National Family Planning Commission. He also held visiting professorships at Stanford University, the Paris Institute of Political Studies, and the Indian Centre for International Economic Studies, and served as an expert for the United Nations. His public service included serving as Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ninth and Tenth National People’s Congress, Vice Chairman of the Eighth National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic National Construction Association for its 12th and 13th terms. He has also held advisory and doctoral supervisory positions at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, and other institutions, as well as concurrent professorships at Tsinghua University and Fudan

Professor Jiang’s research has focused on demography, population economics, and systems engineering, with particular emphasis on population policy, sustainable development, and the application of systems analysis to socio-economic planning. His academic and policy work has addressed family planning, population ageing, and the integration of demographic analysis with national development planning. Through his involvement in national population policy and international demographic research, he has contributed to the application of demographic and systems approaches to population planning and socio-economic development in China. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and policy reports and has participated in academic and policy research on population and development. His work has also involved international scientific collaboration and engagement with questions concerning population structure, demographic change, and sustainable development. Collectively, his academic and public-service career reflects a sustained engagement with the application of demographic and systems science to population policy, socio-economic planning, and broader questions of national and social development.
