Professor Kong’s research has focused on systems science, systems engineering, and science and technology policy, with particular emphasis on national innovation strategy, the socio-economic analysis of technological change, and international science and technology cooperation. His professional work has included participation in national medium- and long-term science and technology development planning and collaboration with international organisations including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO, and the World Bank. He has authored 21 monographs in Chinese and English and more than 200 peer-reviewed publications addressing systems analysis, science and technology policy, and related questions of socio-economic development. In 2026, he participated in the inaugural conference of the International Silk Road Academy of Sciences as a member of its preparatory group. Through his continued engagement in systems research, science and technology policy, and international scientific cooperation, Professor Kong has contributed to connecting systems-oriented approaches with questions of national innovation strategy, science and technology governance, and trans-Eurasian scientific cooperation.
