Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2008, Professor Chongyin Li is a distinguished Chinese meteorologist whose research has focused on atmospheric circulation, tropical meteorology, and climate dynamics. Born on 15 April 1940 in Daxian, Sichuan Province, he graduated from the Department of Applied Geophysics at the University of Science and Technology of China in 1963. He was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001. From 1984 to 1995, he served as Director of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Circulation and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and from 1985 to 1993 as Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG). He was appointed Research Professor at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS, in 1987. In 2005, he was appointed Professor at the College of Meteorology and Oceanography, National University of Defense Technology, and was conferred the rank of Major General in the civilian service.

Professor Li’s research has focused on atmospheric circulation, tropical meteorology, and climate dynamics, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms of the Asian monsoon, the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and their interactions with global climate variability. His work has addressed tropical–extratropical interactions, the predictability of monsoon rainfall, and the dynamics of the East Asian climate system through national research programmes and international scientific collaboration. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in meteorological and climate journals and has contributed to the training of atmospheric scientists in China. Through his leadership of state key laboratories and major research programmes, Professor Li has contributed to connecting fundamental research in atmospheric dynamics with practical applications in weather forecasting, climate prediction, and meteorological research related to national security.
