Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2020, Professor Bing Liao is a distinguished Chinese materials scientist whose research has focused on bio-based organic materials, functional polymers, and organic functional materials. Born in February 1965, he received his Ph.D. in Science from the University of Science and Technology of China. His career has combined materials research with science administration and institutional development. He served as Deputy Director of the Guangzhou Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Director of the CAS Key Laboratory of Cellulose Chemistry, and successively as Deputy General Manager, General Manager, Chairman, and Party Secretary of CAS Guangzhou Chemistry Co., Ltd. He subsequently served as President and Party Secretary of the Guangdong Academy of Sciences. He also held positions including Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Association for Science and Technology and Deputy Director of the Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. A recipient of the State Council Special Allowance, he was elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2020.

Professor Liao’s research has centred on the molecular design, synthesis, and industrial application of cellulose-based and other bio-derived functional materials, with applications in environmental protection, energy storage, and advanced manufacturing. He has authored more than 360 peer-reviewed publications and holds more than 90 authorised invention patents; ten patented technologies have been commercialised, generating a cumulative output value exceeding RMB 8 billion. His work has received two Guangdong Provincial Inventor Awards, three Guangdong Patent Excellence Awards, and First and Second Prizes of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. From 2001 to 2015, he participated in the transformation of the Guangzhou Institute of Chemistry, CAS, from a public research institute into CAS Guangzhou Chemistry Co., Ltd. From 2015, he contributed to the reorganisation of the Guangdong Academy of Sciences and initiatives concerning science and technology management, technology transfer, and the commercialisation of scientific achievements. Through sustained engagement in materials research, technology transfer, and institutional development, Professor Liao has contributed to connecting materials chemistry with industrial application, technology commercialisation, and the development of science and technology institutions.
