Professor Liao’s research has centred on cartography, thematic mapping, atlas compilation, and the history of cartography, with particular emphasis on the theoretical foundations and practical methodologies of modern cartographic science in China. Through sustained research and leadership of major national cartographic projects, he has contributed to the development of cartographic science and practice in China, the compilation of national atlases, and the advancement of cartographic education. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and monographs addressing cartographic theory, methodology, and history. Through his long-standing service as President of the China Science Center of IEAS and Vice President of the Academy, Professor Liao has contributed to connecting cartographic research with applications in spatial information, geographic information dissemination, and international scientific cooperation across Eurasia.
