Hui LIN
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1995, Professor Hui Lin is a distinguished Chinese geomatics scientist whose research has focused on geographic information science, remote sensing, virtual geographic environments, and spatiotemporal analysis. Born in May 1954 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, he received his B.S. in Aerial Photogrammetry from Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping (1976–1980), his M.S. in Cartography and Remote Sensing from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1980–1983), his M.A. in Geographic Information Systems from the State University of New York at Buffalo (1986–1987), and his Ph.D. in Geographic Information Systems from the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA), State University of New York at Buffalo (1988–1992). He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, United Kingdom, in 2020. In 1993, he joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where he served as Chen Shupeng Professor of Geo-Information Science in the Department of Geography and Resource Management and Founding Director of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science. Since August 2019, he has served as Dean of the School of Geography and Environment and Professor at Jiangxi Normal University, where he concurrently directs the Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Wetland and Watershed Research.

Professor Lin’s research has centred on geographic information science, remote sensing, virtual geographic environments, and spatiotemporal analytics, with particular emphasis on immersive virtual environments for geographic analysis, the integration of GIS and remote sensing for environmental monitoring, and the application of geospatial technologies to wetland and watershed management. Through sustained research and leadership of national and international collaborative programmes, he has contributed to the theoretical development and engineering applications of virtual geographic environments, as well as to the integration of geospatial science with virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and big-data analytics. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences. Through academic leadership and international scientific collaboration, Professor Lin has contributed to connecting advances in geospatial information science with applications in environmental conservation, smart-city development, and sustainable watershed management.
