Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2012, Professor Baoyan Liu is a distinguished Chinese specialist in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine whose research and professional work have focused on clinical acupuncture, evidence-based evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine, and the standardisation of acupuncture practice. Born in May 1955, he entered the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Shaanxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, now Shaanxi University of Chinese Medicine, in 1977. From 1982, he served as a traditional Chinese medicine physician at Lintong County Health School in Shaanxi, and from 1985 to 1988 pursued graduate studies in clinical acupuncture at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, now the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. In 1988, he joined the Department of Acupuncture at Guang’anmen Hospital, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and in 1994 became Vice President of the hospital and Director of its Science and Research Division. He served as Deputy Director-General of the Department of Science, Technology and Education of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1997 and as Vice President of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine from 2001, while also undertaking advanced studies at the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University. He currently serves as Chief Research Fellow, Chief Physician, and Doctoral Supervisor at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, President of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies, and Specially Appointed Professor at Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2023, he was appointed a Member of the Academic Division of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.

Professor Liu’s research has centred on clinical acupuncture, evidence-based evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine interventions, and the international standardisation and dissemination of acupuncture, with particular emphasis on large-scale clinical trials, acupuncture safety monitoring, and the development of clinical practice guidelines. Through national research programmes and international scientific collaboration, he has contributed to the development of evidence-based approaches to evaluating acupuncture, the formulation of international acupuncture standards, and the wider dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and clinical guidelines addressing acupuncture research and practice. Through his leadership of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies and continued engagement in national research programmes, Professor Liu has contributed to connecting traditional acupuncture practice with clinical research, evidence-based medicine, standardisation, and international healthcare cooperation.
