Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2020, Professor Mengjun Liu is a distinguished Chinese horticulturist whose research and professional work have focused on jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) science, germplasm resources, genetic improvement, and cultivation. Born in April 1965 in Wangdu, Hebei Province, he received his B.S. from Hebei Agricultural University in 1984, his M.S. in Pomology from the same university in 1987, and his Ph.D. in Botany from Beijing Medical University, now Peking University Health Science Center, in December 1993. He has pursued his academic career at Hebei Agricultural University, serving successively as research trainee, research assistant, associate research fellow, and research fellow at the China Jujube Research Center (1987–2001), before becoming Professor at the College of Horticulture in December 2001. From 1996 to 1997, he conducted postdoctoral research at the National Institute of Horticultural Research, Korea. He was elected Academician of the Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences in 2020. He currently serves as Lifetime Professor at Hebei Agricultural University, Dean of the College of Horticulture, Deputy Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Northern Mountain Agriculture, President of the Hebei Provincial Jujube Industry Technology Research Institute, and Director of the China–Romania Joint Key Laboratory on Jujube.

Professor Liu’s research has centred on jujube germplasm resources, genetic improvement, cultivation technology, and industrial development, with particular emphasis on the conservation and utilisation of jujube germplasm, molecular breeding for quality and stress resistance, and integrated cultivation systems for arid and semi-arid regions. Through sustained research and leadership of national and international jujube research programmes, he has contributed to the development of jujube breeding, cultivation, and industrial technologies and to the scientific utilisation of jujube genetic resources. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and monographs and has promoted international collaboration in horticultural research through the China–Romania Joint Key Laboratory and other bilateral initiatives. Through academic leadership and international scientific cooperation, Professor Liu has contributed to connecting advances in horticultural science with agricultural modernisation, the development of the jujube industry, and sustainable fruit production in China and internationally.
