Professor Lu’s research has centred on quantum functional materials, synchrotron radiation, terahertz science, and advanced X-ray imaging, with three principal areas of focus: the development of multi-parameter composite single-phase quantum functional materials; the development of technologies for physical-property characterisation, including terahertz free-electron lasers, high-sensitivity multi-field terahertz near-field scanning microscopy, mid- to far-infrared free-electron lasers, and large-field-of-view phase-contrast imaging computed tomography; and the development and upgrading of large scientific facilities, including the Hefei Light Source, the Hefei Advanced Light Source, and the Air-Ground Integrated Quantum Precision Measurement facility. He has authored more than 550 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Science, Nature Nanotechnology, and PNAS, as well as six English-language monographs or book chapters, and holds more than 80 authorised invention patents in China, the United States, and Japan, with more than 25 additional patent applications. He has delivered more than 130 invited keynote and symposium presentations and chaired nearly 30 international academic conferences and sessions, including those organised by the Materials Research Society (MRS). He also serves as Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of several journals, including Science China Materials. Professor Lu has led 46 research projects in the United States and China, with cumulative funding approaching RMB 1 billion, and has received the Tang Lixin Outstanding Scholar Award twice (2011 and 2018), the Second Prize of the Anhui Provincial Natural Science Award (2018), the Third Prize of the Anhui Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (2024), and the Anhui Provincial Huangshan Friendship Award (2025). Through sustained research, development of major scientific infrastructure, and international collaboration, his work has contributed to connecting materials physics and advanced photon science with applications in quantum technologies, precision measurement, and large-scale scientific research facilities.
