Yongsheng MA
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2014, Professor Yongsheng Ma is a distinguished Chinese petroleum geologist whose research and professional work have focused on marine carbonate hydrocarbon geology, deep-basin gas systems, and exploration of large gas fields. Born in September 1961 in Tumed Left Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, he received his B.S. in Geology from Wuhan College of Geology (now China University of Geosciences) in 1984, his M.S. from the same institution in 1987, and his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences in 1990. He was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2009 and an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2014. He currently serves as Chief Geologist of China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec), a Member of the Science and Technology Committee of Sinopec, a Member of the Expert Review Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and an Oil and Gas Reserves Assessor for the National Reserves Committee. Since April 2000, he has also served as Adjunct Professor at the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University. Professor Ma began his professional career at China National Petroleum Corporation in 1990, serving as Director of the Comprehensive Research Office at the Tarim Petroleum Exploration Headquarters and Director of the Marine Carbonate Research Office at the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development. In 1998, he joined Sinopec, where he subsequently held positions including Manager of the Southern Marine Oil and Gas Exploration Project Department, Chief Geologist, and General Manager of the Southern Exploration and Development Branch.

Professor Ma’s research has centred on marine carbonate hydrocarbon geology, deep-basin gas systems, and exploration of large gas fields, with particular emphasis on the Sichuan and Tarim basins. Through leadership of major petroleum exploration programmes, he contributed to the discovery and development of the Puguang supergiant sour-gas field in the Sichuan Basin, one of China’s major marine carbonate gas fields, and subsequently participated in exploration leading to the discovery of the Yuanba and Fuling gas fields. These projects have contributed to the expansion of China’s natural gas resource base and to the development of exploration technologies for deep marine carbonate and shale-gas systems. Author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and monographs, Professor Ma has received multiple National Science and Technology Progress Awards for his research and exploration work. Through sustained engagement in petroleum geological research, resource exploration, and large-scale energy projects, his work has contributed to connecting advances in petroleum geology with practical applications in natural gas exploration, resource assessment, and energy-resource development.
