Professor Ma’s research has centred on cotton genetic improvement and cotton production technology, with particular emphasis on the molecular basis of resistance to Verticillium wilt, genomic variation associated with fibre quality, and the coordinated improvement of disease resistance, yield, and fibre quality. Over more than four decades of field and laboratory research, his team has investigated the genetic basis of fibre quality and yield in upland cotton, genomic structural variation associated with breeding improvement, and genetic loci and genes controlling multiple agronomic traits, with research published in journals including Nature Genetics and Nature Biotechnology. As principal investigator, he has completed more than fifty national and ministerial research projects under the National 973 Programme, the National 863 Programme, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has developed 26 certified cotton varieties, including the widely cultivated “Nongdamian” series, which have been planted across more than 160 million mu and generated reported socio-economic benefits exceeding RMB 10 billion. Author of more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and holder of 24 national invention patents, he has supervised more than 200 doctoral and master’s students. His research and breeding work has received three National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second Prize, as first completer) and five Provincial or Ministerial Science and Technology Awards (First Prize). Through sustained research and close engagement with agricultural production, Professor Ma has contributed to connecting advances in crop genetics and molecular breeding with practical applications in cotton production, fibre-resource security, and sustainable agricultural development.
