Professor Niu’s research has focused on big-data-based intelligent management, power operation management, technical economics and management of electric power systems, complex-system modelling, and green and low-carbon energy development, with particular attention to the application of data analytics and artificial intelligence to power-system optimisation, energy efficiency, and the integration of renewable energy. Through participation in and leadership of national research programmes and industry–university–research collaborations, he has contributed to the development of methodologies for intelligent power management and their application to the operation and management of electric power systems in China. His research has addressed issues including energy transition, carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and the digital transformation of the power sector, and has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications and monographs. Through sustained research, academic leadership, and engagement with the energy industry, Professor Niu has contributed to connecting management science and systems analysis with practical questions of energy efficiency, power-system operation, green development, and the transition towards a lower-carbon energy system.
