Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2001, Professor Zengbo Qian was a distinguished Chinese photogrammetrist and remote sensing specialist whose academic career was devoted to photogrammetric education, research, and the development of digital surveying and mapping technologies. Born in June 1931 in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province, he graduated from university in 1954 and subsequently spent more than four decades teaching and conducting research in photogrammetry at surveying and mapping institutions, including the Surveying and Mapping College of PLA Information Engineering University. He served as Professor and Doctoral Supervisor in photogrammetry and remote sensing and held a number of professional positions, including Vice Chairman of the National Steering Committee for Surveying and Mapping Education in Higher Education Institutions, Executive Council Member of the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics, Council Member and Vice Chairman of the Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Professional Committee of the Chinese Society for Surveying and Mapping, and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Image and Graphics. He was elected a National Outstanding Teacher in 1989 and approved to receive a State Council Special Allowance in 1991. His professional achievements were also recognised through one Second-Class Merit Award, four Third-Class Merit Awards, and participation in the 1987 National Conference of PLA Model Workers and Advanced Individuals.

Professor Qian’s research focused on analytical photogrammetry, image-based positioning, digital photogrammetry, remote sensing image processing, and image information systems. Over the course of his teaching career, he authored more than two million Chinese characters of teaching materials, including Fundamentals of Analytical Aerial Triangulation and Space Photogrammetry, which received First and Second Prizes, respectively, in the National Excellent Surveying and Mapping Textbook Awards. His research achievements in analytical photogrammetric positioning and related fields received recognition through national invention patents, the National Science Conference Award, PLA Science and Technology Progress Awards, and PLA Excellent Teaching Achievement Awards. He also contributed to the development of photogrammetric education and practice in China, including the establishment of specialised training in analytical aerial triangulation and space photogrammetry, the development of rapid photographic positioning equipment, and subsequent research on digital image processing and digital photogrammetric systems. His publications and research contributed to the development of photogrammetric methods, remote sensing image processing, and digital surveying and mapping technologies in China.
