Professor Shen’s research has encompassed weak-signal detection, spectral analysis, and image and video signal coding, transmission, and processing, with particular attention to the integration of weak-signal detection with computer technologies. In the 1970s, he developed methods for direct-reading spectroscopic analysis of naturally occurring complex geological mineral samples. During the 1980s, his research addressed the integration of weak-signal detection and computer technology, while in the 1990s he developed ICP-AES spectral interference correction methods that extended conventional analytical approaches. He has also led or participated in national research programmes, including projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National 863 Programme, with research contributions to wavelet coding and network video transmission technologies. He has authored twelve monographs, including Wavelet Coding and Network Video Transmission and Video Coding and Low-Rate Transmission, and more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. He has supervised more than 60 master’s students and more than 30 doctoral students, and his research achievements have received the National Science Conference Major Contribution Achievement Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Through sustained research, academic leadership, and postgraduate supervision, Professor Shen has contributed to connecting fundamental research in signal processing with applications in information technology, communications, image and video processing, and digital media.
