Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2016, Professor Yong Shi is a distinguished Chinese data scientist whose research and professional work have focused on big data mining, virtual economics, and knowledge management. Born in August 1956 in Xiangxi, Hunan Province, he received his B.S. in Mathematics from Southwest Petroleum University in 1982, pursued MBA studies at the China Science and Technology Management Training Center of Dalian University of Technology in 1983, and earned his Ph.D. in Management Science and Computer Systems from the University of Kansas, USA, in 1991. From 1991 to 2004, he held successive academic positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, progressing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and later serving as Charles W. and Margre H. Durham Distinguished Professor of Information Science and Technology and Director of the Data Mining Laboratory. After returning to China in 2004, he served as Director of the CAS Center for Data Technology and Knowledge Economy Research (Preparatory) from 2004 to 2007, Executive Deputy Director of the CAS Research Center on Virtual Economy and Data Science from 2007 to 2013, and Director of the same centre from August 2014. He was elected a Member of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2015 and an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2016. In May 2016, he was appointed Counselor of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and was reappointed in January 2022. He currently serves as Director of the CAS Key Laboratory of Big Data Mining and Knowledge Management and Director of the CAS Research Center on Virtual Economy and Data Science.

Professor Shi’s research has centred on big data mining, virtual economics, and knowledge management, with particular emphasis on optimisation algorithms for large-scale data analysis, modelling of virtual economic systems, and the integration of data science with management decision-making. Through national research programmes and international academic collaboration, he has contributed to the development of data-mining methodologies and their applications in large-scale data analysis, intelligent decision support, and digital economy research in China. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, covering areas including data mining, artificial intelligence, knowledge management, and digital economic systems. His academic and policy advisory work has also contributed to discussions concerning big data strategy, technological innovation, and the digital transformation of the economy. Through sustained research, laboratory leadership, and engagement in science and technology policy, Professor Shi has contributed to connecting advances in data science with practical questions of intelligent management, digital economy development, and data-driven decision-making.
