Since 2018, he has served as Deputy Party Secretary and President of Qinghai Normal University.

Professor Shi’s research has centred on environmental evolution, natural disaster research, and Earth surface processes, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms and assessment of natural hazards and the sustainable management of resources and ecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions. Through national research programmes and leadership of the State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology, he has contributed to research on environmental change, desertification processes, and the prevention and mitigation of natural disasters in China. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and monographs and has addressed the scientific basis of integrated disaster risk management and regional sustainable development. Through sustained research, leadership of national research platforms, and international scientific collaboration, Professor Shi has contributed to connecting geographical research on Earth surface processes and environmental change with practical applications in disaster risk reduction, ecological conservation, resource management, and sustainable regional development.
