Wenzhong SHI
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2018, Professor Wenzhong Shi is a distinguished Chinese geomatics scientist whose research and professional work have focused on urban informatics, smart cities, spatial data quality, and geospatial information technologies. Born in January 1963 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, now Wuhan University, in 1985 and 1988, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the University of Osnabrück, Germany, in 1994. He was selected for the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (Category B) in 2006. In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, United Kingdom, and an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as Chair Professor of Geo-Informatics and Remote Sensing and Director of the LKS Foundation Smart City Research Institute at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as well as Director of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University–Shenzhen Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Futian) and the Joint Laboratory for Geo-Spatial Information between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Wuhan University.

Professor Shi’s research has centred on urban informatics and smart cities, artificial intelligence-based change detection and target recognition in remote sensing imagery, spatial big data analysis and quality control, mobile mapping, and three-dimensional modelling. Through national research programmes and international scientific collaboration, he has contributed to the development of smart-city technologies, methodologies for spatial data quality assessment and assurance, and applications of geospatial artificial intelligence to urban management and environmental monitoring. His work has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences and has addressed the integration of remote sensing, geographic information systems, and artificial intelligence for urban and spatial information applications. In 2023, he was listed as an eligible candidate in the election process for membership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Through sustained research, leadership of joint laboratories and research institutes, and international collaboration, Professor Shi has contributed to connecting advances in geospatial information science with practical applications in smart-city development, spatial data infrastructure, urban management, and sustainable urbanisation.
