Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1999, Professor Jian Song is a distinguished Chinese control theorist and systems engineer whose research and professional career have encompassed control theory, systems engineering, aerospace technology, and science and technology policy. Born on 29 December 1931 in Rongcheng, Shandong Province, he studied at the Shandong Eastern China District Party School Cadre School, Shandong Industrial Cadre School, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Beijing Foreign Languages Institute between 1948 and 1953. From 1953 to 1960, he pursued graduate studies at Moscow State Bauman Technical University in the USSR, subsequently holding research and leadership positions at the Fifth Research Academy of the Ministry of National Defense, the 26th Institute of the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building, and the Jiuquan National Defense Science and Technology Commission Base in Gansu. From 1978 to 1981, he served as Vice President of the Second Academy of the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building. Between 1981 and 1984, he served as Research Professor and Director of the Beijing Institute of Information and Control, Chief Engineer and Vice Minister of the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building, and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Aerospace Industry. From 1984 to 1986, he served as Minister and Party Secretary of the State Science and Technology Commission, and from 1986 to 1993 as State Councilor and concurrently Minister and Party Secretary of the State Science and Technology Commission. He was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991 and a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. From 1998 to 2002, he served as President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and subsequently as Vice Chairman of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Professor Song’s research has focused on control theory, systems engineering, and aerospace technology, with particular emphasis on optimal control, filtering theory, and the application of systems approaches to complex engineering systems. His research in control theory and systems engineering has included work on optimal control and control-theoretic approaches to large-scale systems, while his professional career also involved the development and organisation of research programmes in aerospace and related areas. He participated in the formulation and implementation of major national science and technology programmes and contributed to the development of science and technology policy during the period of reform and opening-up. His research and professional work have been documented in numerous monographs and scholarly publications. Through sustained engagement in research, engineering leadership, academic administration, and science and technology policy, Professor Song has contributed to connecting advances in control theory and systems engineering with applications in aerospace technology, large-scale engineering systems, and the organisation and development of scientific research.
