Professor Song’s research has centred on power system analysis and control, smart grids, power system optimisation, electricity markets, renewable energy integration, and low-carbon energy systems. His work has addressed the modelling, operation, optimisation, and management of modern power systems, including demand response, renewable power generation, flexible power-system operation, and the integration of information and communication technologies with energy networks. Through national and international research programmes, he has contributed to the development of methodologies for the safe, efficient, and low-carbon operation of power systems and to research on emerging energy and electricity-market systems. His academic contributions have been recognised by the Second Prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2020, the Science and Technology Progress Prize of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2020, the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize in 2022, and the National Innovation Excellence Award in 2023. He has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly publications and monographs and has supervised doctoral researchers in electrical and energy engineering. Through sustained research, academic leadership, and international collaboration, Professor Song has contributed to connecting advances in electrical engineering and energy systems with practical applications in smart-grid development, electricity-market reform, renewable-energy integration, and the transition towards low-carbon power systems.
