Jiadong SUN
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1996, Professor Jiadong Sun was a distinguished Chinese aerospace engineer whose career encompassed missile systems, satellite engineering, space exploration, and satellite navigation. Born on 8 April 1929 in Fuxian County, Liaoning Province, now Wafangdian, he enrolled in preparatory Russian-language studies at Harbin Institute of Technology in 1948 and, in 1951, was selected to study aircraft engine engineering at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy in the Soviet Union. He graduated in 1958 and returned to China that year, joining the First Sub-Academy of the Fifth Research Academy of the Ministry of National Defense. He was elected an Academician of the International Academy of Astronautics in 1988, a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991, and an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1996. His early career focused on missile systems, including service as Chief Designer of China’s first independently developed liquid-fuelled medium-range ballistic missile systems. In 1967, he transferred to the newly established China Academy of Space Technology, where he subsequently held senior technical and administrative positions, including Vice President and President, and also served as Chief Engineer of the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Aerospace Industry, and Vice Minister and Director of its Science and Technology Committee.

Professor Sun played a central technical role in the development of a number of major Chinese space programmes. As a technical leader and Chief Designer, he was involved in the overall design and successful launch of China’s first artificial Earth satellite, Dongfanghong-1, in 1970, its first recoverable remote-sensing satellite, the Dongfanghong-2 experimental geostationary communications satellite in 1984, and subsequent application satellites including the Fengyun-2 meteorological satellite and the China–Brazil Earth Resources Satellite. In 2003, he was appointed Chief Designer of China’s Lunar Exploration Programme and subsequently contributed to the development of the BeiDou satellite navigation system. His contributions were recognised through the Special Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Two Bombs, One Satellite Meritorious Medal in 1999, the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award in 2009, and the Medal of the Republic in 2019. He also served as a member of the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 12th National Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and as Senior Advisor to the Lunar Exploration Programme Leading Group. Through more than six decades of engineering leadership and programme development, Professor Sun contributed to the advancement of China’s capabilities in satellite engineering, space exploration, remote sensing, communications, navigation, and related space technologies.
