Song SUN
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2018, Professor Song Sun is a distinguished Chinese marine biologist whose research and professional work have focused on polar marine ecology, jellyfish biology, and ocean ecosystem dynamics. Born in December 1959 in Laiyang, Shandong Province, he received his B.S. from Shandong College of Oceanography, now Ocean University of China, in 1982, his M.S. from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in 1985, and his Ph.D. from the same institute in 1994. He has pursued his academic career at the Institute of Oceanology, CAS, progressing from trainee researcher to Assistant Researcher, Associate Research Fellow, and Research Professor from September 1996. From 1998 to 1999, he served as Deputy Party Secretary, Discipline Inspection Secretary, and Vice Director of the Institute; from 1999 to 2006 as Party Secretary and Vice Director; from 2006 to 2008 as Party Secretary and Director; and from 2008 to 2017 as Director. Between 2017 and 2021, he served as Dean of the College of Marine Science at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Qingdao Science and Education Park Development Center, CAS.

Professor Sun’s research has centred on marine biology, with particular emphasis on polar marine ecosystems, jellyfish biology and blooms, and marine food-web dynamics. Through national research programmes and participation in Antarctic and Arctic scientific expeditions, he has contributed to research on polar marine biodiversity, the ecological responses of ocean ecosystems to environmental and climate change, and the population dynamics and ecological roles of gelatinous zooplankton. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and monographs and has contributed to the development of marine biological research and polar science in China. Through sustained research, leadership of national marine research institutions, and international scientific collaboration, Professor Sun has contributed to connecting fundamental marine ecological research with practical questions concerning polar observation and research, marine ecosystem conservation, and sustainable use of ocean resources across the Eurasian region and beyond.
