Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2021, Professor Xudong Tang is a distinguished Chinese physician and researcher in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) whose professional work has focused on digestive diseases, spleen–stomach theory, and clinical efficacy evaluation of Chinese medicine. Born in March 1963, he graduated from Yangzhou Medical College in July 1982, received his M.S. from Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1990, and earned his Ph.D. from Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1993. He began his clinical career in the Department of Internal Medicine at Lianyungang Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1987 and joined Dongzhimen Hospital affiliated with Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1993. He subsequently served as Director of the Department of Gastroenterology at Guang’anmen Hospital, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in 1997; Vice President of Guang’anmen Hospital in 2000; Party Secretary and Vice President of Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, in 2005; and President of Xiyuan Hospital from 2006, being reappointed in 2016. In December 2018, he was appointed Member of the Party Committee, Member of the Standing Committee, and Vice President of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. He was elected a Member of the Academic Division of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in 2022. He currently serves as Chief Research Fellow of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Director of the Spleen–Stomach Disease Research Institute at Xiyuan Hospital, Director of the Key Laboratory of Spleen Deficiency Research of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Clinical Efficacy and Safety Evaluation of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Professor Tang’s research has centred on the clinical and basic study of TCM approaches to the prevention and treatment of digestive system diseases, the inheritance and development of spleen–stomach disease theory, and methodologies for evaluating the clinical efficacy of Chinese medicine. He has edited twelve monographs, including Practical TCM Gastroenterology, Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Fundamentals and Clinical Practice, and Chinese Spleen–Stomach Disease Science. His work has been recognised with the First Prize of the Science and Technology Award of the China Association of Chinese Medicine, the First Prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, and the Third Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Award. Through sustained clinical research, academic leadership, and development of national research platforms, Professor Tang has contributed to integrating traditional Chinese medical theory with contemporary approaches to clinical research and efficacy evaluation, particularly in the study and management of digestive diseases and the development of evidence-informed approaches to traditional Chinese medicine.
