Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2020, Professor Qi Tian is a distinguished Chinese computer vision scientist whose research and professional work have focused on multimedia information retrieval, artificial intelligence, and intelligent terminal technologies. Born in 1970, he graduated from Chengdu No. 7 High School in 1987, received his B.S. from the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University in 1992, his M.S. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University, USA, in 1996, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002, under the supervision of Academician Thomas S. Huang. From 2002 to 2019, he held a series of academic positions at the University of Texas at San Antonio, progressing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor with tenure and subsequently to Full Professor. He also served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center from 2003 to 2007 and as Lead Researcher in the Multimedia Computing Group at Microsoft Research Asia from 2008 to 2009. He was elected an IEEE Fellow in 2016, appointed Changjiang Chair Professor by the Ministry of Education in 2017, and selected for the national leading talent innovation programme in 2018. From June 2018 to March 2020, he served as Chief Scientist of Computer Vision at Huawei Noah’s Ark Laboratory, followed by service as Chief Scientist of Artificial Intelligence at Huawei Cloud from March 2020 to April 2024. In May 2024, he was appointed Chief Scientist of Huawei Consumer Business Group. He was elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in January 2025. Professor Tian’s research has centred on computer vision, multimedia information retrieval, and artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on large-scale image and video analysis, cross-modal retrieval, and the application of AI to intelligent terminals and cloud computing. Through academic research at international universities and sustained leadership of industrial research at Huawei, he has contributed to the development of computer vision and multimedia intelligence and to their application in consumer electronics, intelligent vehicles, and cloud services. His work has been recognised by the Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Award for Outstanding Contribution in 2021, and he has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and conferences. His research and technology-development activities have also addressed large-scale visual computing, intelligent systems, and AI-enabled applications, contributing to the development and deployment of computer vision technologies in China and internationally. Through sustained research, industrial innovation, and international scientific collaboration, Professor Tian has contributed to connecting advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence with practical applications in intelligent terminals, autonomous systems, cloud computing, and the digital economy.
