Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1997, Professor Qingxi Tong is a distinguished Chinese remote sensing scientist whose research and professional work have focused on remote sensing technology and its applications, particularly hyperspectral remote sensing. Born in 1935, he was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1997. Throughout his career, he has held a number of academic and professional positions in remote sensing and related scientific organisations, including Chairman of the Expert Committee of the National Remote Sensing Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Vice Chairman of the Space Remote Sensing Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Space Science, Executive Director of the Geographical Society of China, Secretary-General of the China National Committee for Remote Sensing, and Council Member of the Asian Association on Remote Sensing. His professional work has included the development and promotion of remote sensing applications in China, as well as participation in national and international scientific cooperation in Earth observation and related fields.

Professor Tong’s research has centred on remote sensing technology and its applications, with particular emphasis on hyperspectral remote sensing and its use in Earth observation, resource surveying, and environmental monitoring. Through participation in and leadership of major national remote sensing programmes, he has contributed to the development and application of remote sensing technologies in China and to the expansion of international cooperation in the field. His scientific achievements have been recognised by fifteen National and Provincial/Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Awards, the First Prize of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Natural Science Award, two Special Prizes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Science and Technology Progress Award, the SPIE International Remote Sensing Technology Achievement Award, and the Asian Remote Sensing Contribution Award and Gold Medal. His research and professional activities have also supported the international exchange of Chinese developments in remote sensing and Earth observation. Through sustained research, scientific leadership, and international collaboration, Professor Tong has contributed to connecting advances in remote sensing science with practical applications in resource management, environmental monitoring, and international Earth observation cooperation.
