Professor Wu’s research and clinical work have centred on the surgical treatment of complex congenital and cardiovascular diseases. He developed an anatomical repair approach for Ebstein’s anomaly that has allowed valve replacement to be avoided in more than 98% of patients in his reported series, and presented this work at the 87th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2007. He also established a surgical approach to the total correction of tetralogy of Fallot that was associated with a reduction in operative mortality in his series from approximately 10% to below 0.8%. Since 1990, he has introduced or performed a range of complex procedures in China, including the Ross procedure, double-switch operation, off-pump bidirectional Glenn procedure, pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, and left ventricular assist device implantation as a bridge to transplantation, as well as arterial switch operations in newborns. He was also involved in early international online broadcasting of coronary artery bypass surgery in China and has performed more than 3,500 operations for severe coronary artery disease. He has published nearly 300 scientific papers and fourteen monographs and received four National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second Prize) and numerous provincial and ministerial awards. Through sustained clinical research, surgical innovation, international academic exchange, and training of cardiovascular surgeons, Professor Wu has contributed to the development of complex cardiac surgery and the dissemination of advanced surgical techniques in China.
