Mu-Yue Hsiao
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2001, Professor Mu-Yue Hsiao is a distinguished Chinese-American information technology expert whose research and professional work have focused on fault-tolerant computing, error-detecting and error-correcting codes, and the design of large-scale computer systems. Born in July 1933 in Changsha, Hunan Province, he moved to Taiwan in 1949 and received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University in 1956. He subsequently pursued graduate study in the United States, obtaining a master’s degree in mathematics from Illinois State University in 1960 and a doctorate in electrical engineering in 1967. He joined IBM in 1960 and, apart from the period of his doctoral studies, spent four decades with the company, working in large-computer development and advancing to IBM Fellow in 1984. He was elected an IEEE Fellow in 1974 and later contributed his expertise to China’s national 863 and 908 technology programmes. His professional career has encompassed industrial research, technical invention, scientific writing in Chinese, English, and Russian, and the development of reliable computing technologies.

Professor Hsiao’s research has centred on fault tolerance, particularly the detection, diagnosis, and correction of errors in digital systems. His work has addressed error-detecting and error-correcting codes, checking and testing methodologies, fault-tolerant system design, and bar-code technology. He holds 46 international patents, with his inventions receiving ten IBM Invention Achievement Awards, two IBM Outstanding Invention Awards, and an IBM Outstanding Innovation Award. His technical publications include Principles of Electronic Computers, published in Chinese in 1964, and a 1968 English-language monograph on logic-circuit design for error detection and correction, which was subsequently translated into Russian by the Soviet Academy of Sciences. His later works include The New Era of Large Computers. He has published 58 scientific papers and contributed to the dissemination of systematic knowledge of computer engineering among Chinese-speaking readers. Through sustained industrial research, technological invention, and engagement with scientific and engineering communities in both the United States and China, Professor Hsiao has contributed to the development of dependable computing and information technology.
