Professor Xu’s research has centred on the design, dynamics, and control of space robots and on intelligent systems capable of learning and adapting in real time. During his work at Carnegie Mellon, he developed experimental platforms for studying robot dynamics and control under simulated microgravity conditions. After returning to China, he contributed to research and system development in intelligent control for space applications. His subsequent work has extended to dynamically stabilised systems, modelling of human control strategies, wearable human–machine interfaces, hybrid-electric vehicles, service robots, unmanned systems, and learning-based control for autonomous vehicles. He has designed and developed more than thirty robots and intelligent systems and has published six monographs and more than 300 scientific papers. As Founding President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, he has overseen the development of the university’s research and education programmes, including work in artificial intelligence, robotics, and data science. Through sustained research in robotics and intelligent control, together with leadership in higher education and research institution development, Professor Xu has contributed to the advancement of space robotics, intelligent systems, and engineering education in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and the wider region.
