Yeung Yue-man
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 1998, Professor Yeung Yue-man is a distinguished Hong Kong geographer whose research and professional work have focused on Asian cities, urban and regional planning, international development, and the modernisation of China. Born in Hong Kong in 1938, he received his B.A. in Geography from the University of Hong Kong in 1962 and subsequently pursued graduate studies in Canada and the United States, receiving his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Chicago in 1972. He taught at the National University of Singapore, served as the Asian representative of Canada’s International Development Research Centre, and held academic positions in North America before joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1984. At CUHK, he served as Head of the Department of Geography, University Registrar, Head of Shaw College, and Founding Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University. His international service has included the Presidency of the Commonwealth Geographical Society and membership of the International Scientific Advisory Board of UNESCO. He has also provided advisory services to organisations including the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, United Nations University, and United Nations Development Programme. In Hong Kong, he has served on a range of public advisory and statutory bodies concerned with planning, housing, development, and public policy. His honours include appointment as a Justice of the Peace, the OBE, the Silver Bauhinia Star, and an Honorary Fellowship of CUHK.

Professor Yeung’s research has centred on Asian urban development, urban and regional planning, international development, and China’s modernisation. Drawing on extensive field research across more than 80 countries and 200 cities, he has examined urbanisation, regional development, and inter-city and inter-regional cooperation in Asia and beyond. He has published more than 38 books, including The Asia-Pacific City in the Era of Globalisation, and has organised and directed numerous international research projects and academic conferences, contributing to research collaboration and the training of younger scholars across Asia. His studies of the Lanzhou–Xining–Yinchuan urban belt provided analytical perspectives on regional development in western China, while research on the Hetao area and county economies in northeastern Guangdong informed discussions of regional planning in the Pan-Pearl River Delta. He has also supported higher education and academic exchange on the mainland through library donations, advisory work, and collaboration with universities and research institutions. Through sustained geographical research, university leadership, and engagement with international development and public policy, Professor Yeung has contributed to connecting urban and regional studies with development practice and to the advancement of geography, city planning, and Hong Kong–mainland academic cooperation.
