Professor Yang’s research has centred on water resources management, water and wastewater treatment and reuse, hazardous-waste treatment, environmental and analytical chemistry, and the monitoring and safety of drinking water and food. Over his international career, he has undertaken nearly 100 major research and industrial projects and contributed to the establishment of environmental laboratories and wastewater-treatment facilities in the United States and Singapore. He has published more than 150 professional papers and delivered more than 100 invited lectures internationally. His laboratory work in Singapore developed analytical capabilities for a broad range of inorganic and organic substances and supported applications across metallurgy, chemical engineering, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and food safety. His research has also included mass-spectrometric approaches to molecular biology and rapid DNA detection. Since returning to China, he has led research on heavy-metal pollution prevention and control, environmental interfacial chemistry, environmental analytical chemistry, and food and drinking-water safety. At Central South University, he has integrated expertise in mining, mineral processing, metallurgy, materials, and chemical engineering to support research on pollution control and water-resource management in major river basins. Through sustained international research, technology development, and academic institution building, Professor Yang has contributed to connecting environmental science and advanced water technologies with water security, pollution control, and the development of environmental engineering and water-resources research in China.
