Professor Ying’s research has centred on computer vision and spectroscopy for rapid, non-destructive assessment of agricultural products and foods, together with intelligent systems for sorting, grading, and handling. His research established computer-vision methods for real-time detection and grading of fruit quality, work recognised by a Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award in 2008. He subsequently expanded his research into intelligent agricultural information perception and agricultural robotics, including methods for sensing internal plant characteristics. His academic work has also included the development of biosystems engineering education at Zhejiang University, where he helped establish undergraduate and doctoral programmes in the field and contributed to the development of agricultural engineering as a national “Double First-Class” discipline. He has served as a lead expert in the China–Europe Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology flagship programme of the Ministry of Science and Technology and as Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering and the Chinese Society for Agricultural Machinery. He has received a Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, two First Prizes and one Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, and six provincial and ministerial first prizes. His research has generated more than 20 ESI Highly Cited Papers and numerous patents, several groups of which have been transferred for commercial application. He has also supervised doctoral research recognised at national level. Through sustained research, academic leadership, and engineering education, Professor Ying has contributed to connecting intelligent sensing and information technologies with agricultural machinery, food-quality assessment, and the development of modern agricultural engineering in China.
