Professor Zhao’s research has centred on information processing in networked embedded systems and the development of technologies underlying the IoT. Beginning in the late 1990s, he worked with research groups led by David Culler and Deborah Estrin on wireless sensor networks and their applications. In 2004, he co-authored Wireless Sensor Networks: An Information Processing Approach with Leonidas Guibas, providing a systematic treatment of the emerging field. His research contributions include the information-driven sensor querying algorithm IDSQ and the SenseWeb and SensorMap infrastructures for shared sensing, as well as work on energy-efficient computing and networked systems. At Microsoft, he led research and development on technologies for monitoring and analysing large-scale computing infrastructure, including energy metering, data compression, microservices, and data-centre analytics. During his tenure at Microsoft Research Asia, his work encompassed indoor positioning and navigation, search indexing, interactive big-data visualisation, and software-defined radio. As Chief Technology Officer at Haier, he led the development of the U+ smart-home platform, extending IoT technologies into consumer applications. He has been granted more than 30 US patents and has published more than 100 academic papers and monographs, while serving on programme committees and in organisational roles for major IEEE and ACM conferences. Through sustained research in networked systems and IoT, together with leadership in academic and industrial research environments, Professor Zhao has contributed to the development of wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things technologies, and their applications in intelligent computing and industry.
