Professor Zhao’s research has centred on artificial intelligence, computer vision, the Internet of Things, and urban sensing and decision-support systems. He has served as Chief Scientist for several national major research programmes, including projects on broadband wireless mobile communications, IoT and smart-city technologies, and sustainable urban development, and leads a National Natural Science Foundation of China project on intelligent visual analysis for marine fish identification. His research has addressed video transmission over broadband mobile networks, sensing and high-precision positioning in complex urban environments, and secure sharing of heterogeneous smart-city resources. His team has developed technologies for large-scale IoT-based spatial sensing and three-dimensional urban modelling, as well as integrated command and management systems for smart-city applications. Through sustained industry–university collaboration, these technologies have been applied in smart-city and urban-management projects in Beijing, Yunnan, Kunming, and Shanghai. In 2025, his team ranked first in the CVPR Hyper-Spectrum Sensing Challenge, a computer-vision competition focused on multimodal perception. Professor Zhao has published more than 200 papers in journals and conferences including CVPR, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, International Journal of Computer Vision, and IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, and has received more than 10,000 citations. He holds more than 70 authorised patents and has authored two monographs. His honours include the First Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award and the First Prize of the Ministry of Education Technological Invention Award. Through research spanning AI, computer vision, communications, and intelligent urban systems, Professor Zhao has contributed to the development and engineering application of AI-enabled sensing and smart-city technologies in China.
