Jack Chun-yiu Cheng
Profile:
Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2007, Professor Jack Chun-yiu Cheng is a Hong Kong orthopaedic surgeon whose clinical and research work has focused on paediatric orthopaedics, spinal deformity, tissue engineering, and biomaterials. Born in 1952, he received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Hong Kong in 1976 and his Doctor of Medicine from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1999. He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong and its teaching hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, in 1983, subsequently serving as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Medicine, University Dean of Students, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Vice-President) from 2002 to 2012. He became Emeritus Professor upon his retirement in 2018 and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the University in 2023. He is currently Research Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at CUHK and Director of the CUHK–Nanjing University Joint Research Centre for Scoliosis. Since 2008, he has also served as academic leader of the Key Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine of the Ministry of Education. He is a Fellow of several surgical and medical colleges, including the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow, the Hong Kong College of Surgeons, the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons. He has served as President of the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association and the Hong Kong Society for Surgery of the Hand, and has contributed to professional and regulatory bodies in Hong Kong and to national research programmes on biomedical materials. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Paediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and serves on the editorial boards of international orthopaedic journals.

Professor Cheng’s research combines tissue engineering and biomaterials with clinical studies of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the most common spinal deformity among adolescents. His work in regenerative medicine has examined the interaction of biomaterials with bone and soft tissue, stem-cell-based approaches to musculoskeletal regeneration, and the development of biomaterial scaffolds for bone and cartilage repair. In parallel, his clinical research on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis has addressed the natural history and progression of the condition, three-dimensional surgical correction, and long-term treatment outcomes. Through his clinical programme at Prince of Wales Hospital and the CUHK–Nanjing University Joint Research Centre for Scoliosis, he has contributed clinical evidence relevant to the surgical management of spinal deformity in Chinese populations and to the training of spinal surgeons in Hong Kong and mainland China. His research has also supported the translation of regenerative medicine and biomaterials research from laboratory studies towards clinical application. Professor Cheng has published more than 250 scientific papers and led 15 research projects funded by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. Through sustained work in paediatric orthopaedic surgery, spinal deformity correction, regenerative medicine, and medical education, he has contributed to the development of orthopaedic practice in Hong Kong and to research in tissue engineering and biomaterials in China.
