Professor Zhu’s principal research and engineering contributions have centred on seed processing and the development of integrated agricultural engineering systems. He directed the research and development of cottonseed foamed-acid delinting technology and complete processing equipment with independent intellectual property rights. The technology received a First Prize of the Ministry of Agriculture for Scientific and Technological Progress in 1989 and a First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1990, as well as recognition at the National Invention Exhibition. Its large-scale application supported the transition of cotton production in China from fuzzy-seed sowing to precision sowing with delinted and coated seed, and more than 360 sets of the equipment were subsequently deployed nationwide. From 1995, as head of planning and design for the Ministry’s seed engineering programme, he led the preparation of the National Ninth Five-Year Seed Engineering Project Master Plan and project proposal, contributing to the establishment of a systematic framework for China’s seed engineering. He subsequently led national research and strategic studies on agricultural product processing, agricultural machinery and facilities, agricultural mechanisation, and the development of the agricultural engineering discipline. His advisory reports on agricultural mechanisation and the rural biogas service system were submitted to the State Council and received written instructions from senior government leaders. Professor Zhu has published more than 120 papers, authored or edited 12 monographs, and holds 12 patents. Through sustained work spanning engineering innovation, strategic research, and professional leadership, he has contributed to the development of agricultural engineering and the modernisation of agriculture and rural areas in China.
