Elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2018, Professor Fu Gao is a distinguished Chinese virologist and immunologist whose work has contributed significantly to the study and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Born on 15 November 1961 in Ying County, Shanxi Province, he received his B.S. from Shanxi Agricultural University in 1983, his M.S. from Beijing Agricultural University, now China Agricultural University, in 1986, and his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in 1995. He currently serves as Director of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), President of the Chinese Society of Biotechnology, Vice President of the Chinese Medical Association, Research Professor at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), and Senior Fellow at the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study, City University of Hong Kong. He has previously served as Director of the Institute of Microbiology, CAS, President of the Savaid Medical School, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of China CDC, and Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, the Royal Society, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other national and international academies. His contributions have been recognised through the Nikkei Asia Prize, the Gamaleya Medal of Russia, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Science and Technology Progress, and the National Award for Excellence in Innovation, among other distinctions. He also holds honorary doctorates from the City University of Macau and the Ministry of Higher Education of Uzbekistan.
